  • Management

We’ve rounded up some of our most popular resources which can be used to support leadership at all levels.

Excellent leaders are needed at every level across social care. They ensure that care is safe and effective, as well as help create a motivated, confident and caring workforce that's skilled and feels valued.

To support the development of leadership skills, we’ve put together this handy up-to-date overview of all of our leadership resources. This includes support for leaders and managers, as well as resources that can be used by anyone, as part of our campaign focused on ‘everyday leadership’.

Leadership starts with me

We want to provide insight on how every member of a care team can practice leadership skills to improve their organisation.

These resources can be used with groups of workers to discuss what ‘everyday leadership’ is, why leadership skills in frontline workers are so important and how they can improve these skills. They cover topics such as making things happen, taking responsibility and working together.

Visit our ‘Leadership starts with me’ webpage for more information.

Care Workforce Pathway

The Care Workforce Pathway is a comprehensive framework that defines careers in adult social care by outlining the knowledge, skills, values, and behaviours required to deliver high-quality, personalised support. As the first universal career structure for the sector, it offers staff a powerful tool to enable them to take control of their careers. By empowering individuals to access learning, gain skills, and grow in their roles, the Pathway supports a culture of continuous development and leadership at every level.

Registered managers’ support

We offer a range of support and resources for registered managers and frontline managers.

Our registered manager membership offer provides access to exclusive resources and a monthly newsletter packed with information and updates. Our local networks, social care managers Facebook group, and WhatsApp groups offer an opportunity to connect with and learn from other managers.

We also have a range of webinars which cover topics to support managers including leading induction for a positive workplace culture, effective supervision, new managers and planning for your Care Quality Commission (CQC) assessment.

Developing new managers and deputies

The 'Developing new managers and deputies guide' provides practical steps to identify, develop, and retain future leaders in adult social care. The guide includes practical tools such as checklists, interview templates, and scenario-based assessments to help adult social care providers develop effective succession planning strategies.

The content is shaped around the Care Workforce Pathway for deputy managers and registered managers, informed by what adult social care employers highlighted are the essential values, behaviours, skills and experience needed by these rewarding but highly demanding roles.

Learning and Development Support Scheme (LDSS)

The Learning and Development Support Scheme (LDSS) for the adult social care workforce is offered by the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) for 2025 to 2026. Eligible adult social care employers in England can claim staff training costs from the LDSS in financial year 2025 to 2026. The funding is available for non-regulated care staff, including deputy and Care Quality Commission-registered managers and agency staff, within the adult social care workforce.

Updated information, including guidance for employers and a list of courses and qualifications eligible for funding, has been published on the .

Moving Up programme

This programme supports managers or aspiring managers from Black and Asian minority groups to develop their leadership skills and drive progress in their careers. It’s designed to empower individuals who are determined to step into senior roles but face barriers that hinder their advancement. Over the last 12 years, the programme has made a significant impact by equipping participants with the confidence, capabilities, and leadership tools needed to take the next step.

Becoming a director programme

We’ve developed two programmes in partnership with National Development Team for Inclusion (NDTi) designed to support aspiring directors.

  • The ‘Becoming a Director of Adult Social Services programme’ is designed exclusively for aspiring Directors of Adult Social Services (DASS) within statutory organisations such as local authorities. It’s intended to equip you to influence strategic decisions, lead cross-sector partnerships, and take the next step in your leadership journey.
  • The ‘Becoming a director in social care programme’ is crafted for those aspiring to direct non-statutory social care organisations, such as independent, private, or third-sector providers. It will help you gain the skills to navigate the complexities of delivering high-quality care in diverse settings, foster innovation, and create sustainable strategies that meet the needs of adults in care.
